Bug Description

Binary package hint: pm-utils

After my laptop hibernates and wake up, I have to re-install my ubuntu distribution to get it to work again. This is what I am doing:

1. Start the laptop
2. Chose hibernate from the power menu (menu at the top right corner)
3. My laptop enters hibernation
4. Wake up the laptop
NOTE: What I have found here is that the screen's brightness is down to maybe 50%. It is alot darker than what it was when I hibernated.

5. Re-start the computer
NOTE: I have seen this by two different ways. I have woken the laptop and taken restart in the power menu or I have tried the fn-f8 (which increase the backlight on my laptop) which causes my laptop to freeze (see bug report "619397 Laptop freeze when changing brightness" for details) and a hard reset is necessary.

6. The laptop does not start
NOTE: Two things can be said here
1. If I start the computer in normal mode, I get to the spash screen (the ubuntu logo) where I can hear a sound and then the computer freezes. I never get to the water theme background but the computer has frozen before that. Also the sound that I hear is like an old LP record with a scratch in it. It play for a while and then jump back and repeat itself a few times before the freeze occurs.
2. I have tried to start the computer in fail safe mode (holding SHIFT to get to the grub menu). Then some text is flashing by the screen is cleared and I get the following fault message:

fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2
/dev/sda1: clean 135927/6111232 files, 958220/24414062 blocks
/dev/sda6: recovering journal
/dev/sda6: clean 643/8830976 files, 612874/35321088 blocks
init: Fail to spawn rc-sysinit main process: Unable to open console: Input/output error

I never get to a console.

The only way I have found to recover from this state is to install Ubuntu 9.10 and then re-install 10.04. I have tried to only re-install 10.04 but that does not solve the problem, even if I format the disk.

Another few notes about my laptop:
It is a HP Compaq Presario CQ61 402E0
/dev/sda1 is mounted at / and normally formatted at re-installation
/dev/sda5 is swap drive
/dev/sda6 is mounted at /home and is not normally formatted at re-installation (although I have tried both)

I have found that I can never get into recovery mode with the kernel that comes standard in the CD installation. I have tried recovery mode without having the fault described in this bug report and I do not get a prompt and I sometimes get the fault message as given in the initial comment.

The problem that I can not start up though or that I have to re-install from CD still stands.

Another finding:

After hibernation and the computer start up. If I change to the following line in /etc/default/grub GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset" I can restart the laptop without problem.
