Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.17-7-generic

My notebook hangs when using 2.6.17-7, sometimes after short time, sometimes after long time.

I tried switching from fglrx to ati driver, but after a couple of hours, the system freezed again. :(

Here is the output of lspci, maybe it helps:

Hans Deragon (deragon) wrote : Re: hangups/freeze with HP Compaq N610c

I have an HP Compaq N610c laptop, and it hangs/freezes once in a while, the same it is described here. Others have been reporting this problem in forums:

http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=313411
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?t=513440

Some system info:

# uname -a
Linux golarina 2.6.17-10-generic #2 SMP Tue Dec 5 22:28:26 UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linux

I cannot reproduce this problem at will. It randomly occurs. Sometimes it hangs 4/5 times in day when I use the computer, other times it runs for a few days if I leave the computer alone.

I am new to Ubuntu, but I am considering installing FC6 on the computer to get a stable platform. Since I have two partitions, for 2 OSs, I could keep Ubuntu Edgy around to perform additional tests.

I can now reproduce the bug at will. I boot my Ubuntu system, login as my user, start a simple gnome-terminal and perform an rsync which tries to send a file from my laptop to my home server.

The machine hangs up, solid. The display and the keyboard do not respond and I have to perform a hard reset. Maybe I could remotely connect to it, but I currently do not have the environment to perform this test. Nothing shows up in syslog.

I think the problem is related with network activity. In the forums, many notice that the problem occurred when running Firefox.

I could configure my installation with debugging probes if someone is willing to instruct me how to do this.

When your machine locks up, does the capslock or numlock key still toggle the respective LED?

Locks up good. None of the leds can be toggled.

Since my last post here, twice I witness the following behavior before a total freeze.

I was browsing the web, when I noticed that neither Firefox nor Thunderbird could connect anymore. About 10s later, the computer hang. Thus, sometimes, the network goes down first and the system later.

Ooh, that's helpful info.

can you post your /var/log/syslog from the time of the crash? Does the crash still occur if you are not using wireless?

Thanks!

I tried a wired connection during the whole weekend, and my rsync worked fine, without any hangup.

The bug is probably within the wireless module. Notice that I am not using the standard N610c wireless card, but a 3rd party card, so I guess that the problem is generic to all wireless cards, not only the one sold by HP for this particular laptop model.

Any further instructions to debug this further? Which module would be the culprit? I would like to rmmod it and replace it with ndiswrapper until the problem is fixed.

Tried to get ndiswrapper working as workaround of this bug, but unfortunately, I cannot get it working. Thus I am stuck and without reliable wireless on my laptop, I cannot make use of Ubuntu on it.

Removed Ubuntu ndiswrapper (buggy) and installed the latest ndiswrapper from tarball. Works great. Now I only need to figure a good way to connect to wireless networks using a GUI. nm-applet is not reliable and does not save keys. :/

Are you using Beryl or Compiz? I'm having a similar problem on my laptop and it only happens when I'm using both my wireless connection and Beryl together. If I'm only using one of the two, I have no problems. I'm using the proprietary Nvidia driver as well as a ndiswrapper setup for my Broadcom wireless card.

One other thing that I noticed set this off was in the Beryl installation, I switched the default screen depth from 16 to 24...may be coincidental because Beryl wouldn't run without it, but the lock-ups did not start for me until I had both Beryl and my wireless card running.

Greetings Scott. To whom are you responding? I never used any of the 3D desktop and as you can read in the previous comments, it is clear that in my case, the problem is the wireless driver.

Scott Bevill (rsbevill) wrote :

Hello Hans. Really just a general response. I'm pretty sure my wireless is at fault too...as my system had no hangups while I was using a wired connection (3d desktop or not). I have only been able to reproduce this hangup when using both my wireless connection and the 3d desktop. I'm not sure if its relevant, but it may be connected to the bug report (since it mentioned video drivers). Neither the video driver or the wireless driver alone has been the problem for me, but only when they've been used together. Judging from the comments, it does appear to support the wireless drivers being more at fault than the video drivers, so I'll keep watching this report for any updates. This is the only place where I've seen some active discussion on it. Thanks.

Hello there,
I am using Compaq Presario V3029au. amd64 laptop with 32bit ubuntu. Also hangups on 64bit ubuntu.

uname -a:

Linux killbill 2.6.17-10-generic #2 SMP Tue Dec 5 22:28:26 UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linux

My laptop shows random hangup behaviour. It hangs both when I am connected to the wired network, or not; running on AC power or from battery, with or without the closed source nvidia, browsing firefox or not, with or without beryl.

But its hangup during rsync (network load!!!) is predictable. after it hangups, the capslock is not toggling, and cant ssh to this machine.

A continuation of the previous comments:

The hangups happen even when I am running from the LiveCD mode. Also it happens when I had openSUSE 10.2 and Mandriva 2007. Though I have had only ubuntu on my laptop for 99% of the time. I have Xubuntu 6.10 on a desktop PC, and it shows no sign of hangups (runs for days and weeks without need for reboot!).
My hunch it could be some fatal combination of my laptop's hardware and the OS. The upcoming ubuntu 7.04 will hopefully find a cure???

Other than this (painful) issue, ubuntu is the best OS for my laptop :-)

Altough there is definitively a problem with wireless networking, you might also suffer from overheating.

sureinlux (sureinlux) wrote : Re: [Bug 59857] Re: hangups

Possibly. I have AMD Turion x64, which is known to overheat. But these
points negate such a possibility:

   1. Hangups happen even say just after 10mins of uptime,
   2. I have it running with increased aeration (keeping a gap of about
10cm from the table) under the laptop for aiding in heat dissipation,
   3. am able to compile a kernel for more than an hour and at full
   throttle, it did'nt hangup.
   4. an used to using the wired connection, so never use wireless
   scanning so not a problem.

Thanks for the feedback, and am open for any suggestions.

Dear All,
I am happy to declare my laptop "hangup free". It is now rock solid. Did not hang even once.

The trick is to add idle=poll as the boot option.

Enjoy.

Cheers
