Bug Description

Binary package hint: packagekit

1) packages:
  kpackagekit - 0.5.4-0ubuntu4 (i386)
  packagekit - 0.5.7-0ubuntu2 (i386)

2) release: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx)

3) I expected to see each item on the search result listed only once, so I didn't feel insecure by choosing one of them...

4) Instead, each item is listed twice.

This does not happen on every search. It happened when I searched for "vlc" and "vlc-plugin".

Hovering the mouse over the results, I just noticed that there is a difference between the repeated packages.

For example: "Jack audio plugins for VLC"

first option expands to:
  vlc-plugin-jack - 1.0.6-1ubuntu1.1 (i386)

second option expands to:
  vlc-plugin-jack - 1.0.6-1ubuntu1 (i386)

Note the change from "ubuntu1.1 (i386)" to "ubuntu1 (i386)"

Anyway, until I found this, i was very confused on which one to choose, and wondering if they were the same... shouldn't KpackageKit deal better with this scenario?

Actually this is the defined behavior of PackageKit, see http://www.packagekit.org/gtk-doc/Transaction.html#Transaction.SearchNames

"The search methods should return all results in all repositories. This may mean that multiple versions of package are returned. If this is not what is wanted by the client program, then the newest filter should be used."

So it is up to KPackageKit to decide.

affects: packagekit (Ubuntu) → kpackagekit (Ubuntu)

This come from one package being from 'lucid' and one frome the 'lucid-updates' repository. KPackagekit could indeed display this better. As this is a bug in kpackagekit itself, please report this bug to the developers at https://bugs.kde.org/ . Thanks! Please report any other bugs you may find.

Changed in kpackagekit (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Low
status: New → Confirmed
status: Confirmed → Invalid
