Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-core

Hi!

I upgraded my Dapper yesterday and got one new file: xserver-xorg-core_1%3a1.0.2-0ubuntu10.3_i386.deb. After the upgrade my X doesn't start anymore. My graphics card is:

----8<----
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV200 QW [Radeon 7500] (prog-if 00 [VGA])
Subsystem: C.P. Technology Co. Ltd RV200 QW [Radeon 7500 Evil Master Multi Display Edition]
Flags: bus master, stepping, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 153
        Memory at d0000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=128M]
        I/O ports at c800 [size=256]
        Memory at dfef0000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
Expansion ROM at dfec0000 [disabled] [size=128K]
        Capabilities: [58] AGP version 2.0
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
----8<----

And I'm using the "evil master multi display edition" ;) with xinerama.

The last lines in X's log say:

----8<----
(II) ATI: Candidate "Device" section "ATI Technologies, Inc. Radeon 7500 (RV200 QW)".
(II) ATI: Candidate "Device" section "ATI Technologies, Inc. Radeon 7500 (RV200 QW) 2".
(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found
----8<----

Are there some drivers missing or something?

After downgrading back to version 1.0.2-0ubuntu10.1 everything works again.

Hi There

I can confirm this. I am using a Dell Inspiron 9100, having an ATI Radeon 9700 video chipset. After having upgraded xserver-xorg-core using the standard update manager and rebooting, I received the exact same error as above.

I tried re-configuring using the following:
  - sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-org
  - X -configure
.. but neither worked.

The only way I could get my windowing manager up and running again was to rollback to the previous version.

I would suggest that this is a crytical bug, specifically since this update is available via the standard update manager. It would be a terrible setback for Ubuntu having workstations in corporate environments suddenly breaking for apparently no reason at all.

Hi!

I can also confirm this bug. I had to downgrade xserver-xorg-core to 1.0.2-0ubuntu10.1 on both machines I have here.
One is using the "nvidia" driver and the other one the "sis" driver.

X -configure tries all drives and cannot load anyone.

I would also suggest that this should be a critical bug.

The new version 1.0.2-0ubuntu10.4 fixed the problem for me. Thanks for the fast patch Rodrigo. :)
