Bug Description

Binary package hint: plymouth

On shutting down Lucid (Final release candidate) on my Acer Aspire One, it seems to exit rather abruptly, and the hard drive gives a 'popping' sound, as if the machine had just been turned off without properly shutting down. I'm a little concerned about what this might eventually do to the hard drive.

While I realise that Plymouth gets blamed for everything around here, a failure to power down a hardware device on shutdown is a kernel issue ;-)

Thanks - I didn't realise that.

Mind you, if it means that Lynx can destroy people's hard drives, a lot of Lynx users will soon be getting unhappy, whatever the source of the problem!

whitefort,
I don't have anything in this bug, nor indeed our internal testing, to support this claim. Do you have something I can use to verify this? Additionally, at minimum, I need apport collected data added to this bug so that we can determine if we have a test case in-house.

Thanks!

Hi whitefort,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 571807

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
