Bug Description

I've just tested Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx Beta2 and found out that it misses a Partition Editor. Having a Partition Editor in the LiveCD is a very important thing, please include KDE Partition Manager in the LiveCD.

If reporting a bug for this wasn't the right thing to do, I apologise.

In a Kubuntu meeting some time ago we were discussing the possiblity of adding a partiton manager and/or editor with the default installation. It was argued that the average user will hopefully not need those applications. Indeed one can do harm way too easily.

Anyhow. As for the parition editing on the live cd in specific... Kubuntu is not a recovery or disk formating distribution, there are others that are much more suited for those tasks (e.g. gparted live) and if necessary one can actually install a partition editing application in a live session.

How come gparted is on the Ubuntu Live ISO and UNR ISO then? There really needs to be a partition editor on the Kubuntu Live iSO.

@Harald I don't see any reason why its thought that users can cause harm. If thats the case, even sudo should be removed. Bad excuse. There's actually no harm in adding a feature that will let the user do something more with the Kubuntu LiveCD at a price of maybe some KBs.

I must say I have a hard time understanding this decision.

If it's a reasonable choice for the GNOME-based Ubuntu-variant to include GParted then I fail to see why including KDE Partition Manager in the KDE based variant "can do harm too easily".

I also fail to see why a GNOME user would need a partitioning tool on the install medium, but a KDE user would not. Are GNOME users in general so much smarter and computer-savvy then us KDE users?

I find it deplorable that you refer KDE users to a GNOME-based recovery CD.

(Disclaimer: I'm the KDE Partition Manager dev.)

Despite Mr. Sitter's claim"one can actually install a partition editing application in a live session", it wasn't obvious for me in Lucid Lynx.

I spent 20 minutes trying to find a graphical partition editor. Google returned references to QtParted, but that's not known to KPackageKit and it seems obsolete. Then references to KDE Partition Manager like this one, but I couldn't find that package in KPackageKit either.

Note for others: the generic-sounding package "partitionmanager" in KPackageKit is actually the graphical KDE Partition Manager. I filed bug #628527 that it should be identified better.
