windows disappear on minimize, can't find them again; get "starting without administrative privledges" on log-in, can't install anything via synaptic; browser window in chrome won't maximize to whole screen, leaves an inch of desktop around browser on maximize

Problems started in kde desktop suddenly. Gnome desktop enviro still fine. Windows won't maximize to take up the whole screen, and disappear on being minimized, not on the panel, can't ever find them again. Rebooting doesn't help, and now constantly get "starting without administrative privileges" I didn't get before. Had installed kubuntu restricted-extras package during the session everything went haywire, don't know if that's related. Can't install anything with Synaptic now, can only mark changes.
