Bug Description

At boot time, the system sort of "hangs" with a cursor in the upper left corner and a mouse pointer in the middle. After pressing [ENTER] the boot continues. I have an NVidia graphics card. The login screen appears as normal, and I can login as usual. After login, however, my windows do not have borders. I must go to Appearance and enable-disable window effects. (which can't be enabled due to the use of the builtin drivers as the Nvidia closed source drivers do not work properly yet.)

As I don't know to which package it belongs, I placed a general bug report.
This is from an 9.10 upgraded system.

So it works normally when you disable visual effects? In other words, it fails when you run compiz.

affects: ubuntu → compiz (Ubuntu)

Actually he says compiz cannot run on his hardware so apparently gnome-session is failing to start metacity.

affects: compiz (Ubuntu) → gnome-session (Ubuntu)

If I start metacity by hand after logging on, all is well indeed!!

Same to me, no window borders in gnome, kde. ubuntu 9.10, nvidia, laptop.
After manual starting of "metacity --replace -c" it crashes.
After second launch, window have borders.
This is not affected by compiz, with no decorations, borderlessness remains.
Starting with gnome (minimal), windows have borders.
Strange bug, log files have no errors, just the first metacity launch has errors.

My issue is resolved by creating a new user and using this user to log on. Seems some strange setting in the (old, upgraded?) user profile!
