Actually, it may have been happening earlier, too.

This appears to be related to plymouth. Reverting plymouth to the last known working version,. 0.8.0~-7, clears up the garbage, but mountall depends on 0.8.0~-10ubuntu1.

I don't believe that this is gdm related at all.

Fully upgraded Lucid with plymouth exhibits this problem, which goes away as soon as plymouth (not libplymouth2) is purged.

Thanks for your report, Noel.

I believe you are right about gdm. I think it's more probably about how/when gdm gets started. I also believe you are seeing scan codes that are being sent to X and that a getty/login session is also running on /dev/tty1 and is getting confused.
In LP: #532047 the confusion may be between X and the plymouth daemon. Are you seeing occasional crashes when pressing certain keys by any chance? If so that might relate to LP: #529230.

If I'm correct your photo may help track these problems down. If I'm wrong your report is even more helpful.

This is an understood bug in plymouth's VT handling that causes gdm to start X on the wrong VT and/or with the VT in an inconsistent state. The fix for this is expected to land tomorrow; please test once the new plymouth upload is available.
