Totem can't play flash video files (*.flv) even though ffmpeg supports them

Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem-gstreamer

"You do not have a decoder installed to handle this file. You might need to install the necessary plugins."

Is the error totem-gstreamer will give when trying to open a *.flv file, even when gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg is installed. Gxine will play flv's (albeit on the one I tested without audio) and reports that it's doing so through ffmpeg.

Thanks for your bug. What version of Ubuntu do you use? Do you have an url to download an example?

I'm using dapper.

With this firefox extension you can download any youtube.com video to test:

Any video should work. I tried looking for a direct flv link but they don't seem to be common.

I can confirm that *.flv files fail to play in totem on the latest Edgy. ffmpeg and gstreamet0.10-ffmpeg are installed.

Google found this random flv for me: blip.tv/file/get/Roland-VanVideoVerite119579.flv

It plays fine in VLC on the same system.

the same goes for .wmv files (wmv9/vc1) on edgy/ppc

ffplay plays them, totem through gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg doesn't...

e.g. http://samples.mplayerhq.hu/V-codecs/WMV9/b52crash2.wmv

shall I open a new bug?

The ffmpeg version bundled with gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg is simply not new enough for wmv9/vc1 decoding. Even in CVS they're using an older version currently and are only fixing fundamental problems in the gstreamer plugin.
