Bug Description

Binary package hint: plymouth

If the machine is booted with the up with the laptop lid screen closed (eg. turn power on, close lid, wait 2-10 minutes for boot/fsck until the login sound, open lid) then the screen is not initialised and left black/blank.

Only way out is a poweroff/reboot.

What hardware is this on?

Unfortunately I can't even attempt to reproduce this with my system here because I have crypted root so have to type in a passphrase at boot time, but I suspect this is a hardware-specific kernel problem rather than a plymouth bug.

I thought this was a plymouth problem, too, but, after removing plymouth (and cryptsetup) just this morning I encountered the dreaded blank/black screen problem.

Sounds more like a general DRM issue, especially if it happens without Plymouth installed.

@Robert B:

Please retest on the latest kernel. The graphics drivers in 2.6.32-16 are updated and include a lid switch fix for intel graphics too. If you still see issues, please move the bug state to New. If you don't, please move the bug state to Invalid.

Thanks

Asus Eee 900-user reporting in and confirming the bug. 2.6.32-16 didn't help. When I upgraded the packages and tested with a reboot, it seemed that X/Gnome didn't even start because I couldn't hear the startup sound.
