Bug Description

I am trying to install lucid-lynx-alpha-2 and I downloaded it and put it on my usb drive. I boot to the usb, the boot menu displays ("Install Ubuntu","Try Ubuntu",etc.) and I can click either of the top two (to boot to lucid) and after about 1 minute it displays:
init: ureadahead-other main process (1515) terminated with status 4
init: ureadahead-other main process (1516) terminated with status 4

It has been on that screen for an hour now and nothing has happened. The keyboard is unresponsive (before this it's numlock would work, now it won't.) I have tried about four times and the same thing has happened every time. I suppose you would like my hardware specs:

CPU: AMD Sempron+ 2800
RAM: 1.5GB DDR400
Graphics: Onboard
USB: 8GB Kingston Datatraveller.

Thanks in advance

When I try install from a from a CD, it gives different numbers (I think it is just the pid) so they are not important, but the same thing still happens.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Ok, here's the full run through.
I was on Ubuntu 9.10 and there were some problems with nautilus so I saw that Lucid Lynx Alpha was out. I don't use this computer for work so it wasn't vital for me to have a working a computer so I downloaded it off the website and ran a MD5 sum check. It ran successfully. I burned it to a USB and had no problems. I then booted up to the USB, then after about 2 minutes it displayed: "init: ureadahead-other main process (1515) terminated with status 4" and "init: ureadahead-other main process (1516) terminated with status 4" and hung there for all eternity (I waited an hour.) I then tried many different times, each with the same symptoms. No boot splash or GRUB came up, but the first menu did ("Install Ubuntu","Try Ubuntu without ..","Memory Test", etc.) I have tried all the ones which try to boot up but none work. I was expecting it to boot up.
I then tried it with a CD, and the same thing happens, except that different numbers came up (lower).
I then downloaded Ubuntu 9.10 again, reinstalled and it worked fine. Will try 10.04 when the beta comes out. (It might be out already.)
I can't use "Help -> Report a Problem" because I'm not actually on a usable OS!

I've the same symptom, just not with install, but after dist-upgrade. I've tried removing "and hal started" from /etc/init/gdm, but it wasn't helpful.

Anyway, how to debug upstart? Or at least force it into a sequential boot mode?

Anyway, I don't suggest using the update manager to upgrade, you won't upgrade to Gnome 3! That's predominately why I'm upgrading.

Booted from Lucid Beta-1 CD, pressed Esc in the beginning and choose "install".
After some time it went to console and showed the attached lines, and the last line kept repeating.
