Bug Description

1. It's not clear that Update Manager is displaying the dialog.
2. It's not clear what running on battery power has to do with installing updates. (Do updates install better or worse when running on battery power?)

I've attached a mockup with proposed string changes.

Primary text: "Your computer is running on battery power."
Secondary text: "It is safer to plug your computer into AC power while installing updates."

Affirmative button: "Continue"
Negative button (default): "Don't install updates now"

(Window icon is unchanged)

Thanks for taking a look at this, David and Michael!
This bug report is a duplicate. The original (bug #494772) is already filed (with lots of subscribers :o).
There are some additional technical and philosophical musings that may be worth looking into. In particular, as far as I'm aware (though I'm going on a vague memory of a brief glance at update-notifier) we're checking for updates while on battery, which is almost as bad as installing them.

Marking this bug a duplicate of another bug with "additional technical and philosophical musings" is a good way to guarantee that this will not be fixed for Lucid.

Bug #494772 needs to be divided into separate bugs that can be fixed -- it is currently a dumping ground for discussion about updating on battery power.

I did originally look at bug #494772 but I though it was principally addressing the problem of the "Update on battery" dialog opening above normal windows while Update Manager's main window is a pop-under.
