Bug Description

Binary package hint: ecryptfs-utils

Hello,

At the end of Ubuntu Lucid installation at the dpkg running stage it showed an error about ecryptfs-utils and it showed on the toolbar till I fixed it by running
#apt-get -f install
as suggested by the command line

tester01@tester01-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install xchat

You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
ecryptfs-utils: Depends: libecryptfs0 (>= 77) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: keyutils but it is not going to be installed
xchat: Depends: xchat-common (= 2.8.6-4ubuntu4) but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: tcl but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
tester01@tester01-laptop:~$

that is it.

Thank you for this beautiful and free software

Hmm, I don't quite understand your report...

Is this a Lucid install, or an upgrade from Karmic?

Is this still reproducible, or perhaps an archive hiccup?

Are you actually using ecryptfs for encrypted home or private?

It's Lucid install:
ubuntu-9.10-netbook-remix-i386.iso
the md5sum attached may reveal the version for you
I think it's reproducible if you installed the same iso but I don't know if that have been fixed since the time I reported

I'm not using it or at least no one asked me if I want or not. this problem happen at the end of installation process and alerts kept showing tell I fixed the problem like suggested in the command line

I've had a problem with a broken ecryptfs-utils that I tried to remove. The normal sudo apt-get remove ecryptfs-utils fails as does sudo apt-get -f install.

Instead I used the following sequence which seemed to have removed the necessary parts and put the update manager back to normal:

Command Sequence: (VERY CAREFUL TYPING PLEASE)

cd /var/lib/dpkg/info
sudo rm ecryptfs-utils.*
sudo dpkg --remove ecryptfs-utils

To make sure that the package manager is working okay, start it with:
sudo upate-manager -d
and make it check for updates.

This worked for me.

I suspect that ecryptfs-utils is broken for Lucid for now. Some bug fixes are apparently in the works.

Here is what caused the removal:

Investigating ecryptfs-utils
Package ecryptfs-utils has broken Depends on libecryptfs0
  Removing ecryptfs-utils because I can't find libecryptfs0

That is a bit puzzling, but one possible way to ensure ecryptfs-utils stays installed is to make it a depends of adduser instead of a recommends.
