Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Dear Developers,

I am using Lucid since Alpha 1 release with Screen reader (Orca GNOME Screen Reader).

I not see any problem, but my wife tells me my display shows an entire blank white or black screen when the GNOME Desktop is loaded. My video card is an Intel Gma X3100 integrated video card my notebook. I haven't see this problem under Ubuntu Karmic, Ubuntu Jaunty and older Ubuntu versions, this problem happening only Lucid development version.

Because new Alpha2 release is publicated yesterday, I downloaded the current Daily Cd image (32 bit i386 architecture image). The problem is present.

I checked the System/Preferences/Display tool values (I lucky because screen reader spokening the values) my installed Lucid system, and compared my Jaunty system values:
The resolution is: 1280X800, 16:10
The refresh rateis: 60 HZ
This settings are equals my Lucid system and my Jaunty system.

For example, I put some icons with the desktop, and do a screen shot. Of course, the screen shot shows the putted icons when my wife look with the Jaunty system, but this icons is not seeing when I work in Lucid my display, only a black or white blank screen are seeing.

I attaching this screen shot with next comment.

If need more information, I sending your request depending.

Attila

[This is an automatic notification.]

Thanks for reporting this bug to help making the Intel graphics driver
better. We hear from upstream that a number of bugs (possibly including
this one) have been fixed in the newer DRM code from the 2.6.33 kernel.
I don't know if your bug is one of the ones fixed in this release,
though, but we've prepared a PPA with this DRM update. Would you mind
installing this, rebooting, and testing if the original issue can be
reproduced with it or not?

The DRM PPA is here:

    https://edge.launchpad.net/~apw/+archive/red

Note there could be new bugs... please file these as new reports using
the command 'ubuntu-bug linux' (for kernel or DRM or KMS bugs) or
'ubuntu-bug xorg' if you suspect them to be X.org issues.

After Linux-image-2.6.32-13-generic kernel my original reported problem
(back or white screen when GNOME desktop is loaded) is fixed with Intel
Gma X3100 chip, but Rice Harrington confirmed this problem.
I don't no Rice have an Intel Gma X3100 video card or another type intel
chip, because my notebook have an Intel Gma X3100 video card, but this
car not producing problems.
My Lucid system is full uptodated.

If need, I welcome testing the suggested PPA packages.

Thanks for testing and confirming the fix Attila.

It looks likely the kernel team will be including the new DRM in the kernel this week. I am retargeting this bug report to them since it sounds like that will resolve this issue.

Rice, now I tested your suggested PPA upgrades, and I not see any
problem after upgrade.
I adding this ppa with add-apt-repository my Lucid system:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/apw/red/ubuntu lucid main

I install all upgrades with sudo apt-get dist-upgrade command. Now I
using following kernel after upgrade (uname -a result output):
Linux hammera-laptop 2.6.32-16-generic #23~drm33v5-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 4
17:21:31 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

I not see any problem my notebook with integrated Intel GMA X3100 video
card after upgrade.

Anybody confirming this good results? Prewious kernel version
(2.6.32-15-generic) works equals right with this kernel version.
