Bug Description

Symptoms
========

Having to register a new account is somewhat of a burden to filing a new bug / commenting on a bug / answering a question / doing a translation etc.

Possible solutions
==================
When a user isn't logged in we could capture the action and then ask them to login or create an account. If they choose to create an account rather than logging in with an existing, we could stash their action, do the account creation in the SSO, and upon completion of that signup execute the deferred action.

This defers the burden of having to register in LP until after the user has taken a useful / interesting action while still ensuring that the user will be contactable and has passed those spam protection measures that are part of the SSO signup process.

We also require display name, although if this is deemed too much of a
burden we can default it to their email address.

Maybe mpt has an opinion. I'd suggest not asking for it, but trying to pull it from the From: header, and falling back to just the email address, if needed.

Brad: Yes, better not to ask users for their name; that's just one more field discouraging users from filling in the form. But would pulling the name from the From: field without warning users be considered a privacy invasion by the paranoid?

All: I filed a related request, bug #96595:
Malone should let anonymous users post comments now, and confirm their email address later.

That request is about commenting, not about bug reporting.

i just want to tell you, that the fixing of this bug is (high) requested..
only a few people are testing my project.. and if these few people are frightened by the registration i think i'll get no bug reports anymore :/

Matthew Paul Thomas (mpt) wrote :

Ubuntu already has more bug reports than the QA team can cope with, so possibly they would rather not have this mechanism any more, while small project's like balrok's would like it. Perhaps whether this is possible should be part of a project-specific Bugs setting for ease-of-reporting vs. amount-of-information-reported.

+1 on what Matthew Paul Thomas said. Different projects will want different tradeoffs, and ease-of-bug-reporting can be a big deal for a project.
