Bug Description
Binary package hint: linux-image-
Lenovo S10e with WLAN Broadcom BCM4312 b/g rev01was working fine with proprietary STA-broadcom drivers under 2.6.31-16 under karmic.
After upgrading to 2.6.31-17-generic (SMP) no wireless lan anymore.
In 2.6.31-16 it worked without hickups. I tried to use b43 (b43-fwcutter with Firmware-ID: FW13), but the device doesn't seem to come up due to fatal DMA errors.

Those b43-errors seem to lockup the kernel - I had to manually reset the box in order to complete the bug-collection process.

The latest aport-collection data shows the situation with 2.6.31-17 running and STA-driver activated, but neither wireless nor network connection via wireless. The data was reported with a LAN-connection enabled.
HugoHirsch (ubuntubugs-aiki-it) wrote : | #49 |
To circumvent the problem I tried to install STA-module under 2.6.31-16 (the configuration that worked perfectly before the kernel update) - but the activation of the driver fails.
Attached you will find /var/log/jockey.log

If I boot into 2.6.31-17 the machine freezes after a couple of minutes with GDM running -
last log message is:

To avoid this problem I can only manually rmmod b43 before the machine freezes.

Selecting the STA driver (wl.ko) has, at least in the past, automatically created a blacklist file
/etc/modprobe.
# Warning: This file is autogenerated by bcmwl-kernel-
blacklist b43
blacklist b43legacy
blacklist ssb
blacklist bcm43xx
Does this file still exist? I am using the STA driver too and did not notice breakage. But the messages seen indicate that for some reason the b43 driver gets activated.
HugoHirsch (ubuntubugs-aiki-it) wrote : | #53 |
The file does not exist, which may be due to the fact that neither the installation of b43 nor the installation of STA can be done successfully.
I was able to install STA (without network connection) after manually creating /etc/modprobe.
After reboot I do see a /etc/modprobe.
Stefan Bader (smb) wrote : | #54 |
The initrd might need to be updated with "suido update-initramfs -u". There must be no message of b43 in dmesg and the module should not be loaded. For manual testing, the b43 and ssb modules need to be unloaded, then the wl module, when getting inserted, should find and operate the device.
HugoHirsch (ubuntubugs-aiki-it) wrote : | #55 |
I updated initramfs and rebooted several times - no change.
Modules b43 and ssb are not loaded and wl not automatically. Could this be the cause for all the problems?
Under Hardware-driver I see that STA is successfully enabled, but no wifi working.
Seems as if I cannot insert the module properly:

I have Broadcom with STA working on HP mini 110 after upgrade to 2.6.31-17 (from 2.6.31-14, the version included in Netbook Remix upgrade). But it is not working on HP nx7300 after upgrade form 2.6.31-17, and Jockey do not shows any drivers loaded (it shows them on netbook remix). Manually loading drivers do not help. Sometimes it works under -16, sometimes not. Can it be that the upgrade changed Broadcom firmware?

After some more investigation, it was found that coincidently at the time of upgrade Broadcom WIFI disappeared from PCI bus. It looks more as hardware then software error.

No change with 2.6.31-19-generic.
System still tells me that "Broadcom ST WLAN driver" is activated, but no wireless is working.
Can I provide more info to get this solved - currently the laptop is unusable for me.

With b43 I do get a wireless connection (NetworkManager shows connection) but no network connection (no ping possible). The log is full with messages like:
b43-phy0: Controller RESET (DMA error) ...

If I'm using the STA-drivers (visible via System -> Hardware drivers) I don't get a network and wireless connection (e.g. NetworkManager does not show my wireless device).
