When I attach USB drives or insert a CD/DVD no icons appear on the desktop - but gnome-volume-
I'm using ubuntu hoary apt-latest, macmini/ppc with kernel 2.6.11.7 (+inotify) and I booted with and without inotify. I haven't touched anything in /etc since the first installation.
I even have added new users to my system but the effect is the same: the first gdm login gives no icons, but the second does.
