Bug Description

Scrolling using the right and lower edge of the trackpad makes the area of the trackpad actually usable to move the mouse very small. Add to this that when you're trying to move a window as in bug #39328 if you press to low on the trackpad it makes you scroll between windows. The same problem occurs in KDE if you select a window in the KDE-bar and then move your mouse up to the program, but hit the the lower parts of the trackpad.

Replacing the edge scrolling way of scrolling with the two finger scroll will solve both these bugs and is very commonly used with modern devices, such as mobile phones, thus comes very natural to a new user. This function/way of scrolling is already implemented and should be enabled by default.

Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut should be a small usability issue , in the default Ubuntu 9.10 install , that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be addressed as part of the project.

people are used to things that are in the OS changing this bring comfort(might) and problems for many(surity).

For further info about papercuts criteria , pls read > https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut

Don't worry though, This bug has been marked as "invalid" ONLY in the papercuts project.

Then where would it be suitable to file this bug to bring it up for discussion?
Should it be filed for the gpointing-device-settings package for Ubuntu or should I participate in some sort of meeting/live discussion with someone or some part of the development team to bring this issue along with it's solution into the spotlight?

I'm see this and several other issues. Is there a better upstream forum for reporting this stuff? I can't find any reference to synaptics on freedesktop.org or x.org. Apparently there is some GPL license issue with the package.

I'd be willing to look at the code, but I can't find any reference to the driver later than 2004.

Seems like this should be fixed in the upstream Ubuntu package. Tough it seems like this bug has gone under the radar of the package maintainers.

Hi rovanion

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. If you could test the current Ubuntu stable release(maverick ubuntu 10.10), this would help us a lot. If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #>, and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue

While I do appreciate you taking the time to replace the <insert name> tag with my name I would much more appreciate that you actually read the report. To hopefully draw your actual attention to this bugreport I have submitted the, even tough completely unnecessary, logs requested. I can confirm that this bugreport is still actual and accurate for the latest release of Ubuntu.

Rovanion while these logs doesn't seem to be useful now but they are indeed useful to the developers and also sometimes for me, to actually confirm the bugs in the latest release sometimes.

Ah!!
I thought that your scrolling areas are not correct but as you can still experiance it in the current release, I think that this is not a bug at all. Its rather a wishlist. If you can confirm that your touchpad scrolling areas are all right like others, I can mark it into a wishlist.

Yes the scrolling areas on my touchpad, even tough they are just "areas" as defined by the software, are correctly functioning.

This is a design-bug as the original description says, a request to change the default behavior. Please do change to the correct label if it is so that I mislabeled it.

Hi Rovanion

The default settings has been set by the upstream by a lot of thought process. The default behavior or settings has to such that it covers a majority of touchpads without any extra configuration and as of I know there are many laptops that has a touchpad without multitouch support. Emulation doesn't generate that experience in any way.

Because there are many users who want to have their own tastes and configuration they have provided a good enough and easy interface for that. However the default settings is a discretion of the developers who have chosen in the very right of all. So even requesting them of such a choice for changing the default settings , isn't a good idea, in that sense I'm closing this bug report. However if you have a very strong thought that you can personally convince them, I will advice you to personally contact them rather that waiting here in a bug report.

Thanks
Keep filing bugs, to make ubuntu better!!

You are correct, it's not just the touchpads of the Synaptics brand, which all support multi-finger gestures, that have their drivers in the xserver-xorg-input-synaptics package. Also ALPS touchpad which do not support these gestures have drivers in this package.

Good that you have started to clean up in the bug-tracker, I had since long lost all hope of ever getting an answer to this bug.

You are welcome, Rovanion to ask for help or to file more bugs. I liked
talking to you in this issue. Also, we can be late sometimes but we always
try our best to attend all bugs that are filed in our bug tracker.
