Bug Description

Binary package hint: youtube-dl

(Using version 2008.03.22 in Ubuntu Karmic) Youtube-dl is no longer able to extract the title information using the -t option. It worked fine until around the time of Karmic's release, but now it fails for every video I try.

Here's what I see:
$ youtube-dl -t http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zegtH-acXE
Retrieving video webpage... done.
Extracting video title... failed.
Error: unable to extract video title.
Try again several times. It may be a temporary problem.
Other typical problems:

* Video no longer exists.
* Video requires age confirmation but you did not provide an account.
* You provided the account data, but it is not valid.
* The connection was cut suddenly for some reason.
* YouTube changed their system, and the program no longer works.

Try to confirm you are able to view the video using a web browser.
Use the same video URL and account information, if needed, with this program.
When using a proxy, make sure http_proxy has http://host:port format.
Try again several times and contact me if the problem persists.

The version in karmic is way too old.

The newer version supports many new things and has many bugfixes. Please, take it from Debian's unstable distribution.

Regards.

Thank you! That does work. If anyone else needs it, the direct link is here: http://packages.debian.org/sid/all/youtube-dl/download

Out of curiosity, do you know why this wasn't picked up in the Karmic merge cycle? It looks like the only dependency is Python 2.4.

You're welcome.

That will always have the latest version that I package.

I don't quite remember. The only thing that I know is that I still have
some packages in Debian that I requested to be sync'ed with karmic, but
those requests are still there.

Perhaps I didn't follow the proper protocol, but I would appreciate
someone in Ubuntu keeping in touch with me in Debian. More collaboration
would be welcome.

Regards, Rogério Brito.

Just for the record, this has been fixed a long time ago on Debian (I uploaded two newer version of it already) and the release managers have allowed it to enter testing.

I would, therefore, request that this be merged/synced/whatever is the ubuntu-speak for getting the version that I uploaded to Debian's repository.
