Bug Description

Regarding whatever package sets prefs for compositing in 9.10:

On a relatively old Dell C610 with an Ati Mobility M16 16mb graphics core...
Compositing is turned on by default in the installer and in the fresh system.
This would be welcomed if it actually worked. Unfortunately, what happens is that large portions of the screen simply fail to update. Installing or using the installed system is impossible in this state.

Turning off visual effects in the appearance prefs fixes the issue.

Hi anath3ma,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you're using a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

Attached are the requested files. Also, i've noticed that some rare
system events still print windows that are messed up even without
compositing. See the attached jpg for an example of a network state
notice. (attaching to an access point) Again, the jpg is a photo of
what happens when compositing is OFF.
