As the failure happens from lilo invocation reassigning.

Please try the new package with LILO 23.1:
http://lilo.alioth.debian.org/ftp/ubuntu

These packages were made for Natty. If you cannot install them on Karmic
you can try to compile it by yourself (with debuild ...) with the source
package (same link).
