Updated to the latest Ubuntu 9.10 now my laptop wont shut down it goes into dos and stays there I have to remove the battery to shut down

You're maybe seeing bug #468589

As the bug is now "fix released", an update should come in the next few days. Please wait for a "sysvinit" package update and report here if the bug still occurs.
