Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

I've very step conscious new user of Emapthy, and a long time user of Pidgin.

I don't like that, in order to pull up my contact list, I much both click the "envelope" icon and then select "Emapthy". When I used pidgin, it required one click to pull up my contact list. We should always strive to reduces steps, and that is the purpose of this report.

the issue is rather an indicator applet one, you can turn it off the indicator use in the empathy preferences though too

By default, in the upcoming release. I don't think empathy should rest in the indicator-applet.

Most users are coming from pidgin, and they are use to seeing a applet specifically for IM. I know this would confuse my Uncle, who I previously set up to use pidgin.

Having Empathy in the indicator-applet only adds an additional step to the process of viewing your Contact List. Given the abundance of space for the top-right panel, I like Empathy to have an applet all to itself.

While we understand that it means additional clicks, this is by design.
If you'd like to talk about the design the Ayatana list is a better
place to do that.

Ted,

I just don't think Empathy should depend so elusively on the indicator-applet, at minimum they should use in conjunction with providing their on applet there at same time:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/462008

The indicator-applet is just too inconspicuous for new users like my Uncle Walter. He needs stuff to pop up in his face. Perhaps you could add and option to make the drawer open for 3 seconds each time something is put in it. Might even be worthy making a default option.

Bubble notifications look good, but you can't click on them, and if you are away from you computer when they happen, you have nothing conspicuous enough to persuade you to click that "envelope" icon. Perhaps the "drawer" should stay open until you click away. So if you come back to your computer, and you've had incoming communication, the draw is open until you click on something else. This also prevents a two steps: (1) moving you mouse to a small "envelope" icon by the clock and (2) clicking that small icon.

Clicking a way is no big deal. You could put code in that where it doesn't allow you to click away immediately. The would prevent it from going away when a user click something one millisecond after it opens, but allow them to click away (say) a half second after it opens therefore closing it.

I think this is much better for new users on its debut.
