Bug Description

Binary package hint: tuxpaint

Tuxpaint hangs when trying to quit in Ubuntu Karmic after an upgrade from Jaunty.

The only way to regain access to the desktop is to switch to another tty using CTRL + ALT + Fx and use kill -s 9 to shut it down.

after clean install of 9.10 and tuxpain.
tuxpaint use 100% cpu, sound is very chopy and the application refuse to quit (need to kill it via the system monitor).
There is no output to the terminal.

Hi,

I'm using whatever is the default for Karmic, which is probably pulseaudio.
Will make sure when I get home.

Thanks.

Karmic uses the libsdl-alsa package by default, at least this one was installed on my system after upgrading from Jaunty. Installing libsdl-pulseaudio manually fixed the issue for me (Karmic 64-bit).

Same problem here on Karmic 64-bit (AMD). Either after an upgrade from Jaunty or a fresh Karmic install of Ubuntu. I install tuxpaint for my kids and it shows as a zombie process. I had to kill the window a few times but, was amazed at how many processes just sit there as zombies.

So tuxpaint in a fresh install of karmic doesn't shut down cleanly,
and this is repeatable?

I'm still not running Karmic, so I cannot test this to confirm.
I believe Tux Paint in Karmic is still 0.9.20 (as it was in Jaunty),
therefore it's likely an issue with libSDL or some other underlying
library that did get upgraded.

Can someone closer to Ubuntu take a peek? Thanks!

I can confirm. What should I do?

I think we should file a bug to make that library be installed by default, though (instead of alsa).

Ah, the bug was already filed a year ago:

It says it's nominated for Lucid. Maybe we should mark this as duplicate and continue there.

Can other people confirm that it works okay with the other pulse audio

I can confirm both the bug being present in Karmic, and the workaround. Installed the pulse audio version of libsdl and the problems went away.

I've managed to reproduce this once, on first run, but not after that.

Installation of libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio, solved problem with termination, and cpu consumption. So the program now works properly, but still in System monitor there are two processes named tuxpaint and one is marked as zombie..

Same here, the installation of pulseaudio fixed the shutdown issues.
