Bug Description

Binary package hint: usplash-theme-ubuntu

The default usplash (which has now been re-enabled by default) theme does not contain a progress bar. Additionally, the theme is grey-scaled. Both are regressions with respect to Jaunty.

This likely needs to be fixed in conjuction with bug 446596 for fsck progress reporting.

Agustín Dall'Alba (agusdallalba) wrote :

Why not to use the logo as a progress bar. The segments of the logo start appearing clockwise, starting at 9 or 7, as the system boots. If this is possible, it would mantain the minimalistic design of the current usplash theme while having a visual feedback of system's boot progress.

There will not be a progress bar for the new theme, and the white logo is intentional. Both of these things are improvements aesthetically IMHO.

This is a bad argument. It is not an argument at all. What is the sense of a bootscreen? The sense is to have a clue about the progression of the process and you have no clue with the actual bootscreen. With this bootscreen, you can better remove it completly. Shure, bootscreens aren't exactly at all, but as mentioned above, they give a clue. There should be a visible progress, otherwise the whole thing is completly senseless.

In my opinion, Agustín Dall'Alba is right and the Idea is really well.

Here is the prior "usplash-theme-ubuntu" forked to retain color and progress:

While I'm a fan of design "white space", I think having a design "white blizzard" is a bad move. Especially when that white blizzard is, in fact, black, with a small white logo that's extremely small and gives no indication of loading progress. The Ubuntu logo is nice looking, admittedly, but I also like seeing 'Ubuntu' somewhere with it, as well as some sort of confirmation that my system isn't hanging, the boot isn't stuck, or that my display is frozen.

Colors are pleasing to the eye. That's why gardens are popular. And rainbows. You like rainbows, don't you?

The default theme in karmic is certainly not going to be changed, at this point, but I don't see any reason we can't reintroduce the previous theme as a separate package in universe. Requesting a freeze exception from motu-release for usplash-theme-ubuntu-color as a "new" source package for karmic.
