Same problem here: before update sound works good, now no sound.

lspci:
Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)

If I try:
speaker-test -c2 -Dplug:front

I can hear sound from speaker

Hi guys,
here an HP Compaq 6720s, kubuntu karmic with a 2.6.31 from kernel.org . I had this audio issue with this soundcard

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

then I've seen that I had error while trying to load alsa power_save option at boot time (maybe not included in my kernel) and I appended this line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, commenting the power_save one

#options snd-hda-intel power_save=10 power_save_controller=N
options snd-hda-intel model=ref

Then I rebooted and now finally sound work fine :)

@Natale That's not really a "solution" -- you should file a separate
bug using default Karmic software. Please use "ubuntu-bug alsa-base"
once you're booted into Karmic's kernel.
