Bug Description

Using 9.10 Beta.

Can't find package name for the workspace switcher.

When using the workspace switcher applet, if I create more than one column of workspaces, the columns below the top row don't function, as in they are present, but clicking them makes it go to the workspace in the top row, in the same vertical position. For example, if I have a 2 workspace square switcher and try to select the bottom left one, it selects the top left one instead, and selecting the bottom right one instead selects the top right one. Ctrl-Alt-Arrow Keys don't select the rest of the workspaces. Also, in Compiz Settings Manager (ccsm), the "Number of Desktops" slider and accompanying up/down value thing can't be changed. The arrows in the up/down value thing are disabled. The horizontal virtual size and vertical virtual size sliders work, however the same effect above is encountered, the exact same end as using the workspace switcher applet's Preferences.

So, apparently the problem with creating more workspaces is beyond the applet, but this seems to be the best place to put this report, because people who know best about workspaces would likely see it.

Expected: The selected workspace in the switcher is displayed and functions correctly.

Actual: The workspace that is actually selected is the one directly above it, in other words the workspace in the top row in the same column.

Thank you for taking your time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.
I believe this is a compiz issue, since the workspaces applet uses compiz for desktop switching afaik.
Also, you reported this bug against the beta release of Karmic Koala, do you still expirience this bug in the final release, and did this work previously? Thanks in advance.

I have the exact same problem in the latest release. I can get to the bottom row by using Expo option, but not the hot keys or the workspace switcher.

I turned compiz off and now I have a 1x4 workspace area, I can switch to them with no problems.

I turned compiz back on now, and I'm not having any difficulty. I did have the workspace switcher turned off on the main toolbar and then I started having problems when I added it back on/ changed some settings. This also prevented me from using the "Cube" properly as it though I only had 2 work spaces available.

When I enable the Cube, It disable the desktop wall. That leads to me not being able to get to the bottom rows, if I turn the desktop wall back on, and diable the cube, I have no problems selecting the lower rows.

I've seen some fixes that involve manually editing your gconf settings, unfortunately they did not work for me.

What does seem to work, and sheds light on why the bug is caused, is to do the following:

1) Kill compiz (with something like 'metacity --replace')
2) Right-click on the workspace switcher (which probably now looks like a 1x2 box) and select preferences.
3) Change it to 1x1
4) Restart compiz (with something like 'compiz --replace')

It seems that the workspace switcher that compiz uses or puts up in place of the regular switcher is using some of the regular switchers settings. Ah well.

Interestingly enough I had a workspace switcher in another panel that was working fine, maybe that's why editing my gconf settings didn't work, because they probably need to have different settings.

Thanks for your bug report. Is this still an issue with the latest release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal? May you please check and comment back? Thanks in advance!.
