Bug Description

When you boot the installation CD you have two main choices "Try Ubuntu on your computer" and "Install Ubuntu on your computer".

When I make the choice to try Ubuntu, everything works well and I can install Ubuntu without a problem.

But when I select "Install Ubuntu", the live CD is also started, and I get some errors:
First I get: "The network manager applet could not find some required resources. It cannot continue".

Afterwards I get the warning: "The computer has only 0 bytes disk space remaining". And the installation process is not working.

I have a completely new Dell Latitude E5400.

What version of Ubuntu are you seeing this problem with? Are you able to reproduce the issue with a daily-live CD (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/)? Please note the date of the CD you tested in your reply.

Thanks!

I tried now the daily-live CD 20091014, and I have still the same problem as I described: When I select "Install Ubuntu", first I get the white Ubuntu sign on my screen. Then the screen gets black for a quite long while. Afterwards the installation process is not started, but the live cd with the messages I wrote in the bug description. When I select there install again, I can choose my time region and if I click then on next, I receive the message: "Install Ubuntu ubi-timezone failed with exit code 1 ...".

Can you please attach /var/log/installer/dm after you select "Install Ubuntu" and it brings you to the live environment.

Also, does removing "quiet splash" from the kernel command line fix the bug for you? Select a language at the CD boot screen, then hit F6 followed by Escape. Delete "quiet splash" from the line that appears and hit enter. You wont see the white Ubuntu logo at all if you followed those steps correctly.

If in your testing you encounter that "install failed with exit code" message, please run `apport-collect 446182`.

Also, please run the "Check CD for defects" option on the CD boot menu, just so we can rule out a bad CD burn.

Thanks!

The CD has no defect, I checked it.
I can't attach /var/log/installer/dm, because it doesn't exist, when the live environment starts after selecting "Install Ubuntu". When I open the file system directory, it is just empty.
Removing "quiet splash" makes no change as well.
Sometimes the live environment is even not started, and the screen stays just black.
Once I even succeeded in starting the installation process, but I couldn't reproduce it. This time, when it was working, my laptop was attached to my docking station and I use the external screen and I remove "quiet splash". But it just worked once...
I used still the daily-live CD 20091014

The "0 bytes remaining" message is caused by bug 444901.

The same problem occurs when attempting to install the karmic rc (64 bit version) into a Virtual Box vm running on a 64 bit host. Screenshot attached.

Since you reported this against a development version of Xubuntu Karmic, Xubuntu 9.10 has had many changes since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. Could you verify if this does still exist? If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect 446182.

Unfortunately these bugs are back again with the new Lucid Lynx with exactly the same behavior as the first post describes. I've tested the netbook edition on a netbook.

What is the date of the image you are using? Is this still happening using the latest image available from http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ ? Please include the date of the image you use when commenting. Thanks.
