Bug Description

When I try to adjust the login screen settings on Kubuntu 9.1 Beta, I have to click the "unlock" button in order to give me admin priveledges. so normally, I would just click 'unlock' then I would enter my root password, etc, but for some reason, nothing happens when I click the 'unlock' button. Therefore, I cannot change any login settings....

The login screen settings in System Settings doesn't have an unlock button. Are you really using kdm?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:

 * Is this reproducible?
 * If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
 * Do you use gdm to start your session? Do you use GNOME there?

 This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

I'm not the original reporter, but I'm affected too.

* This is always reproducible
* only have to exec gdmsetup or sudo gdmsetup
* I have GDM installed, but I'm also affected by #477724, so KDM is my default display manager. I'm using gnome.

gdmsetup is not meant to work if gdm is not running

if gdmsetup isn't supposed to be functional when gdm is not running perhaps a check could be made at launch and a message to that effect given rather than operating with incomplete and incomprehensible functionality?

Perhaps the behaviour of the dialog could be imporved when gdm isn't running, but that's a non-standard configuration and not really a priority issue

This bug is affected me too.

- I installed Ubuntu 10.04 . I am able to create User and able to get the user list in the login screen.

- I want kde to be my default desk top and I installed kde

- After this when I log in I see Kubuntu Splash screen and getting a login screen with only one user (last user).

- I login and try to set Login Screen Settings Window but it is still Disabled state in the sudo login
