This happens because we redirect to another page when the form is submitted, and thus we lose the error message.

With the nice date widget there it doesn't seem to be possible to enter an invalid date unless you hack the form.
Is this still a problem? I think this can be duped against bug 57300. What do you say?

Yes, this bug seems to have been fixed, but it's not the same as bug 57300. This one is about not geting any feedback if you don't specify a date or if you specify, let's say, 31st of February. The other one is about an oops when setting a retroactive expiry date.
