Bug Description

uninstalled and reinstalled client via apt-get after blowing away metadata in an attempt to diagnose continuing sync issues

Now the client applet will not run.

This bug was triggered by a partial cleanup of the metadata.

I'll proposed a branch to fix this ASAP
