Bug Description

Martin Albisetti wrote on 2009-09-15:

Hello fellow Launchpadians,

The end of our 3.0 cycle is approaching, and one of the bug pieces
missing from the puzzle is a home page refresh.
I've taken a few hours to sketch out something we can work on, and
split it into 2, one for logged in users, and one for the ones who
aren't. I think we want to take the approach more and more, where
logged in users see something different, as they usually have
different needs.
I'm on leave until next week, so I've also uploaded[1] the balsamiq[2]
source files so anyone can tinker with them as the discussion goes on.
Once I start work again full speed on Monday, I will be sprinting for
2 weeks, so it's unlikely I will be able to HTMLize this, so I'll need
a volunteer to do so and land the branch :)

I linked a branch where I have done the basic conversion: use locationless template, re-arranged page elements, added text as per the mock-ups. But it is far from finished.

The page needs some CSS love and the conditonals for (not-)logged-in display.

I have to do some translations stuff atm but might get back to it. If some-one wants to take it from here, though, feel free to do so.

I am almost done, I pushed the latest version and here are the screenshots:

I still need to do the following:
- Replace the blogposts with something current ones with longer teasers.
- The list on the left should probably have icons instead of –es but I don't have one for "code reviews"...
- Talk to someone from foundations about the login/logout links/buttons not being clickable.

I diverged in the following ways from Martins mock-ups:
- The statistics under the search box are not left-aligned. That is beyond my CSS Zen.
- The list on the left links to the application home pages - there was nothing else pointing to them on the screen.
- I extended and re-arranged the "Get started" list.

In a future revision of the home page, I'd like to see a box that shows projects that have been recently touched in some way. So, perhaps five projects that have had a bug filed, a branch pushed to, a translation made, whatever.

This will help show the variety of activities and projects in Launchpad and give the home page a "live" feel.

Another screenshot that gives more prominence to the "What's Launchpad" section.

Looks good.

  * I think I prefer the non-bold (i.e. -2.png version) iteration
  * The "... and 9 more projects" ending of the features projects list is confusing -- 11 more featured projects? Or what? So maybe just "Browse all 11 projects" is a better option for linktext.
  * The Get started section refers to the sandbox first, and create an account later. However, AIUI, you can't create an account on staging, can you? So aren't we tricking our users a bit there? If you agree, then the cheapest answer is changing the "sandbox environment" link to point to a wiki howto page that explains this gotcha, and maybe reversing the order of the links and text; maybe:

_Creating an account_ allows you to start working within Launchpad. You can test Launchpad's functionality in our sandbox environment; _read more about it_.

 * Take a tour is left-aligned, but the "...and 11 more project" and "Read the blog" links are right-aligned. Is that really right?

  * There is no longer a link to browse or create projects and people. Is that okay? Can you reach those pages from anywhere else?
  * Finally, would it be worth mentioning mailing lists on the "what's launchpad" section?

To be clear, this is definitely an improvement over what we have right now!

Good ideas, I actually had the same idea (wiki page) about staging usage but forgot about it. Will do that.

Did you see the logged-in version? There is "list of things to do " on the right, creating teams and projects is among the first of those.

* I agree that it is odd that the tour link is not right-aligned but I tried it and it looks totally out of place on the right, so it will have to stay left.
* Mailing lists can be in the list but the link would have to go to the help wiki (which is not a bad choice). Actually, I'll do the same for Code reviews since they don't have a home page on launchpad, either.
