Bug Description

The 3.0 builders page does not display whether a builder is AUTO or MANUAL.

This is bad, because users have no way to tell why chunks of the build farm are sitting idle whilst emergency chroot maintenance is underway.

Actually they do, but only to buildd admins! Easy enough to fix though. Thanks for the bug report!

I suspect that Max is talking about https://edge.launchpad.net/builders (BuilderSet:+index) and that's a known regression that will be addressed while fixing bug #334408 (Builder.status).

If this is the case this bug is a probably a dup.

Regarding the suggestion that https://edge.launchpad.net/builders/bohrium (Builder:+index) doesn't show the builder mode public, that's not true. It's presented to everyone and editable by buildd-admins.

Uh yes it's /builders not builder pages, I need to stop replying to bugmail when half awake at midnight.

I don't think bug 334408 has anything to do with this as far as I can see? That one's more to do with builds listings. In this case we need to put the AUTO/MANUAL indication back in the build farm listing.

AUTO/MANUAL is an aspect of the builder status, in fact AUTO is implicit and 'idle' will become 'manual' for builders in that state.

Either way, it' s perfectly fine to keep this bug open, as a more specific reminder of the problem.

I don't agree that it's only relevant to reveal whether a builder is in manual state whilst it is otherwise idle

Max,

MANUAL flag only suppresses automatic dispatching on available builders, that's why it's only relevant when the builder is IDLE. Jobs will be processed and collected normally on MANUAL builders, and this flags makes absolutely no difference to DISABLED builders.

Reinforcing my point, MANUAL is not relevant to DISABLED or BUILDING builders.

Max Bowsher (maxb) wrote :

MANUAL is relevant for a BUILDING builder because it tells you that builder will not be made available for further builds without human intervention.

Furthermore, the fact that some builders may be set on MANUAL is relevant to informing users viewing the state of build farm that extra-ordinary maintenance is in progress.

In both scenarios builders will quiesce to "Status: MANUAL" when they finish what they were doing. No *maintenance* can be done while builders are working.

Wait to see the new changes in action then we can discuss again.
