(Sorry -- forgot to add:)
Note that synaptic registers gdm as removed, but in "residual config" status.

I had removed completely the /var/lib/gdm library (or file?) via these commands:

cd /var/lib
sudo rm -rf gdm

then I tried to install gdm (2.27.90-0ubuntu3) again. I got the following errors:

The home directory '/var/lib/gdm' already exists. Not copying from '/etc/skel'.
adduser: Warning: The home directory '/var/lib/gam' does not belong to the user you are currently creating.
  * changes will take effect when all current X sessions have ended.
invoke-rc.d: initscript gdm, action "reload" failed.

i was trying to install gdm as i was unable to see screen resolution option under system>administrator. i use it from package manager. and it gave me the error saying that it is not getting installed.

I'm not very good with Ubuntu so pardon me for my language.

Every time I perform an upgrade either via command line or using the package manager, I get the following error:

Errors were encountered while processing:
 gdm-themes
 gdm-guest-session
 indicator-applet-session
 ubuntu-desktop

It is also affecting the sound on my computer.

I have tried to uninstall, purge and re-install all of these packages but I have had no luck. I have had this issue for the last few weeks now.

Any suggestions?
