Bug Description

Binary package hint: kde4libs

When I asked about this on IRC some time ago, I think it was 4.3-rc1, some guy told me that the devs are aware of the problem and are working on a fix. But it still doesn't work on the final 4.3 packages for Jaunty (from the PPA).

What doesn't work? Help->Report Bug doesn't do anything. Makes reporting stuff to KDE upstream a lot harder.

I read on some roadmap the plan to replace the KDE bug report dialog with an apport one or something. If thats really the plan, please give me an option to report bugs directly to upstream as well.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
Package: kdelibs5 4:4.3.0-0ubuntu1~jaunty1~ppa2
ProcEnviron:
 LANGUAGE=
 PATH=(custom, user)
 LANG=en_US.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: kde4libs
Uname: Linux 2.6.28-14-generic x86_64
UnreportableReason: This is not a genuine Ubuntu package

I ran strace -ff on kmenuedit and chose Help > Report Bug... . A child process does
  execve("/usr/share/apport/apport-kde", ["/usr/share/apport/apport-kde", "-f", "-p", "13908"], [/* 39 vars */]) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)

It's trying to run /usr/share/apport/apport-kde , but this doesn't exist in my copy of Jaunty. Either this Karmic package needs to be backported to Jaunty, or KDE (I think libkdeui.so.5) modified to not invoke it.

As a workaround I tried making apport-kde a symlink to apport-qt. Then Help >Report Bug... makes a "Collecting problem information" dialog appear, but it fails with "Package 13908 does not exist", so the arguments to apport-qt are different.

As another workaround I tried installing the Karmic "apport-kde" package on Jaunty, but then Help > Report Bug... prints the error
  Could not import module, is a package upgrade in progress? Error: cannot import name unicode_gettext
because it needs a newer apport module that provides this unicode_gettext() function.

We need to track down the patch that makes the menu item use apport and remove it from the Jaunty packages.

Seems like this is fixed in Karmic... almost, see bug 461068.

That's a problem with apport itself. Glad to hear that other than that, that this is fixed.

I confirm this bug on Karmic Koala, when I click on "report a bug" inside a KDE application, nothing happens.
I installed apport-kde, and problem was fixed for digiKam and K3b.

On KDE application skrooge, something is launched, but I got the french message "Impossible de déterminer le nom du paquet ou du paquet source." that could be translated to "Unable to find package name or source package".
