Bug 401591 has supposedly been fixed, but it is still broken on the U350. Therefore, this doesn't seem to be a duplicate.

Bye, Nicola (from bug 40159)

I guess, the bug status should be changed. It is not a duplicate. I need info and fix about FN keys not working on Karmic, Lenovo U350

The bug is not a duplicate. The problem is fixed for acer 5715z but the keys are not working with my Lenovo u350.

I'm also seeing this problem. I get this in my dmesg
ACPI: Failed to switch the brightness

This is my temporary hack for getting the keys working:
http://github.com/zaius/bright

It's definitely not perfect. Especially since the laptop can't put the screen to sleep after an idle time. But I don't even know where to start to fix ACPI problems.

The default brightness can also be set by using the fn-brightness keys while in the bios.

folks,
     Please test this against the latest live image of Lucid: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/
I'm interested to know if this is still an issue in the latest development version.

Thanks!

i have the same problem.

- after installation of lucid beta1 brightness-notification was shown but the brightness actually did not change.
- then i used emil kalvelands link to fix the problem
- however since an update one or two weeks ago the problem is back and can't be solved with kalveland's link

ok works for me now.

edited /etc/default/grub

from

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

to

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset acpi_backlight=video"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset acpi_backlight=video"

acpi_backlight=vendor as suggested in kalvelands link didn't work for me.

This is still an issue for me... The solutions provided in #6 and #12 both work for me except I get a kernel panic (flashing caps/scroll) on wake from sleep. The keys do not work in the maverick beta either, but I can't check the sleep issue since a clean install already crashes on sleep and/or wake.
