Bug Description

I'm testing the kubuntu karmic Alpha3.
After I logout, kdm doesn't start correctly.
It just hang on there, with the console black screen.
I have to switch to other tty console, login and run "sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart" to get to the kdm login screen.

except this Kubuntu karmic A3 is comparatively more stable than ubuntu.
I installed gdm and tried to replace kdm with it.
but it seems gdm doesn't start correctly at the startup, or maybe I didn't do it right...
Then I had to switch back to kdm.

Sounds like X could be crashing on restart.
Could you attach a copy of the /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old files after a failed logout?
Also, we will need a copy of the output of the command lspci -vvnn in an attachment. Thanks in advance.

Changed in kdebase-workspace (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete

Thanks. It appears that the intel video driver is causing Xorg to crash when restarting. I am moving this report on to the intel driver package, and the Ubuntu X people will probably want a full backtrace of the crash: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing

It should be noted that the initial backtrace in Xorg.0.log.old looks like that from bug 404439, but I am not sure how the Ubuntu X team handles duplicates.

Does that help if I try to compile the driver to test?

I'm having this problem too. Installed KDE 4.3 this morning and noticed the problem a few hours later.

I've found a workaround in http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15162
Just add

TerminateServer=true

in /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc in the [X-:*-Core] section,

[X-:*-Core]
AllowNullPasswd=true
AllowShutdown=All
NoPassEnable=false
NoPassUsers=
ServerArgsLocal=-br -nolisten tcp
ServerCmd=/usr/bin/X
TerminateServer=true

After this, KDM works as expected, but I don't know if this can cause side effects.

The same bug (and fix by comment #9, i.e. the "TerminateServer=true" line) can be confirmed by me with a SiS 761Gx graphics card.
