Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

When I change to the console with ctrl+alt+F1 and go back to the Xorg session (crtl+alt+f7), xorg seems to lose it's color depth information or something a like. My VGA card is a ATI 4890 and I'm using the default open-source ati driver.

Last entry from Xorg.0.log:
(II) VESA(0): VBESetVBEMode failed...Tried again without customized values.

I've also attached a screenshot.

I'm sorry, didn't realize that there's nothing wrong on the screenshot. Guess it has to do with the video output then, I'll assume that it's still a driver problem (?).

I've made a (crappy) photo. You should see it, try the top half of the screen.

Hi marceldevries,

Thanks for including an image to demonstrate the issue. Could you also please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log or Xorg.0.log.old file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

There seems to be nothing wrong in Xorg.0.log after reproducing. All I have to do is restart the Xorg session. Either by logging out or a reboot.

I'm confused because your Xorg.0.log shows you using the -vesa driver rather than -ati. Please run 'apport-collect 400590' after reproducing the problem, so we can get a complete set of data files.

I'm sorry. I assumed it was using the ati driver. Should have done a bit more research. Stupid me. But I think it can be closed since I'm back to windows for the moment. So I can't gather more information for the moment.

Since the hardware is no longer available for doing troubleshooting with, we'll have to close the bug for now. However please feel free to reopen if you or anyone else has the same HW and can reproduce this issue using the latest development version of Ubuntu and is willing to do some troubleshooting with it.
