Bug Description

The icons (or the lack of icons) in the context menu of the Gnome Panel are confusing.
Right now the "Remove from Panel" entry has a "-" (minus) as icon. I think the more common "remove" icon would be a red X. (if you search on google image search or icon search engines for "remove icon" or "delete icon" you see loads and laods of red Xs but only very few minus icons.

So i think this icon should be changed to prevents users to unintentionally deleting icons from the panel.

I have made a small mockup of the context menu. In the attachment you can see the status quo on the left side and on the right you see the icons as would do them (i am no designer, but i hope you get the point)

Glad I searched the bugs before I added a new one - this is EXACTLY the problem I still face quite often: accidentally removing an icon from the panel when I just wanted to move it.This can be very frustrating for new users, as they often don't know how to restore the Icons and how the panel works in general.

My original suggestion would have been to simply switch the places of "remove from panel" and "lock to panel". This way, "lock to panel" and "move" would be grouped together (which is more logical), and "remove from panel" would be the last option, after the divider.

But I think a combination of reodering and new icons would be even better.

I'm with Gregor, change the order and spend some new icons. That'd make it much more useable.

Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention.

This is a good catch, but do note the X is used for close so it cannot be used for remove , for removal minus is a good representative. Maybe the minus icon can be done in red.

Also, does this problem exist in Karmic[9.10] ? , Until this problem is reproduced in Karmic, I'm setting this as Incomplete.

A paper cut is a minor usability annoyance that an average user would encounter on his/her first day of using a new installation of Ubuntu 9.10.

For further info about papercuts criteria , pls read > https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut

Don't worry though, This bug has been marked as "incomplete" ONLY in the papercuts project.

The icon is the same in Karmic latest release.

So probably a colored red [minus] icon , could be considered.

Quoting Andreas Nilsson:
""" in gnome-icon-theme trunk, we recently changed the delete icon to a red sign looking like this (/)
so changing the icon from gtk-remove to gtk-delete in the panel would get the desired effect once we get a release of that out
and gtk-delete might be a better choice in this situation, as the gtk-remove links to a icon called list-remove
and nothing is getting removed from a list in this case """

In the one-canvas branch of gnome-icon-theme [1] that I think will be merged into master pretty soon (and therefore would go into GNOME 2.28/Ubuntu Karmic), gtk-delete use a red (/)-symbol.
So in order to use that, gnome-panel would need to change the stock icon from gtk-remove to gtk-delete for this menu.

Sorry for the duplication, I didn't see that mac_v added my comments from IRC before writing my comment.

@glacionaut:
Could you report this upstream? I'v added this to the gnome-panel package , you can add the gnome bug link once you have reported upstream.
For info on filling bugs upstream > https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME

Also add Andreas' suggested solution.
