Bug Description

The main sound (for login, movies or music, with Amarok, Kaffeine, etc.) is good actually, no problem at all. But when I try to play Supertuxkart and Chromium, the sound turns ugly. Not all game affected though, like Battletanks and gL-117 they're OK.

Me too.

Fresh install and updates as of 19 th july 2009.
At first I installed ubuntustudio and Supertuxkart and the music + sound effects were just horrible in the game.
Now I made a new installation without the ubuntustudio package and got no better results. I played the game two times and the first went with no problems but second try gave me stuttering sound as well as frame rate <20 fps with exactly the same settings. This is what the game gave when started from the console:

mikko@xpc:~$ supertuxkart
Data files will be fetched from: '/usr/share/games/supertuxkart/'
Highscores will be saved in '/home/mikko/.supertuxkart/highscore.data'.

If you upgrade ALSA, All your problems are fixed, I have made a small shell script to download/install everything you need! Enjoy!

to run Download it to your desktop, open a terminal, type: sh ~/Desktop/upgradealsa.sh

I don't know if I should open a new bug or append to this one?

I have the same problems with supertuxkart, sound is broken or stuttering. Esp. in splitscreen mode when many small sounds are played at the same time. But for me the time of appearance is different. Everything worked like a charm in 9.04 but stopped working in 9.10.

My audio device is this:
00:06.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP55 High Definition Audio (rev a2)

Any ideas what to test?

Thanks Fabian

My problems are still there, so Fabian is not alone in this one.

mikko@xpc:~$ cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.20.

As Darkedge wrote above he has a shell script which updates ALSA to version 1.0.22. We could try and see if that solves this issue. And of course Ubuntu 10.04 should also have the latest and greatest updates...

You can download the script by clicking the text "Shell Script to download + Install the needed files" in his message and run it from console by:

cd Downloads
sh upgradealsa.download

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p alsa-base 385013

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
