Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

UNR / Karmic on a Samsung NC10.

It was working reasonably fast, the previous update was during UDS.
I updated one week later and UNR has been unusable since.
The netbook-launcher process is taking all the CPU, and it takes about 10 to 15 seconds to refresh the display.

It seems everything is now soft rendered.
Difficult to say which package caused this, there were too many.
I tried to downgrade xserver-xorg-video-intel from 2.7.99 to 2.7.1 and also boot on 2.6.30-5 (which was fine before), no change.

Any way to move forward with this bug? It's still unusable after the last batch of updates.
My glxinfo is still as bad as above, please help.

Your Xorg log shows i915_dri.so is properly loaded and drm was opened. Yet glxinfo shows you get software rendering. That looks like a permission problem with /dev/dri/card0. Permissions are handled via ACL and the ACL should be set by udev in Karmic. However, your udev log does not show any ACL at all (there should be lines like ACL_MANAGE=1).

- check if udev-extras is installed (that contains the acl handling and rules)
- check with getfacl /dev/dri/card0 if your userid has rw permissions on /dev/dri/card0 and check if there is a + sign in the permissions mask
- run the command devkit -s drm and check if it mentions ACL_MANAGE=1

Please post the results of the getfacl and devkit commands to this bug.

In my case udev-extras was not installed. Installing it and rebooting fixed the problem for me.

udev-extras was missing for me too. I remember i also had issues with sound in gnome also related to permissions.
So it was all related after all.
udev-extras should be a Depends somehow.

udev-extras is a dependency of ubuntu-standard, which is installed both in todays live image and in the jaunty image.
Is it possible ubuntu-standard was removed during a partial upgrade for you?

I don't have ubuntu-standard installed. No trace of it in my /var/log/apt/term.log either.
I guess it's not installed by default in UNR so this dep should also be added to ubuntu-netbook-remix.

ACL handling has moved again, now from udev-extras into udev (in 143-1).
As xserver-xorg already recommends udev, this issue should be fixed now.
