Bug Description

FFMPEG is used to encode movies. A common function is to create mpg video's for dvd burning. i.e. convert a captured avi home video or xvid avi into a dvd mpg file.

command is FFMPEG -i <input video> -target pal-dvd <output file>
this will crash at random intervals.
I suggest that FFMPEG is updated to the latest version. Also, this file is used in AVIDEMUX (which is in the dapper repos> - so avidemux will crash too.

I'll look into getting more info. Something that may help is the following.

i installed the flight 6 live cd on my other intel celeron machine. and
tried to convert
http://www.uni-duesseldorf.de/~ricke/matrix_xp/mxp_engl_l.zip<http://www.uni-duesseldorf.de/%7Ericke/matrix_xp/mxp_engl_l.zip>-
IT worked!

So I did a fresh install on my AMD Sempron 2800+ machine. then tired to
encode the same clip - segfault!
I downgraded to the hoard deb for ffmpeg (ffmpeg_0.cvs20050121-
1ubuntu1.1_i386.deb) . The conversion lasted longer, but again a segfault.
Also the latest deb from marillat also segfault (well it was worth a try).

Command used
FFMPEG -i <input file> -target pal-dvd dvd.mpg

So the problem seems to be AMD processor specifc.

I'm really confused why it worked on the intel box but not my main AMD pc. -
Any thoughts?

I'm not exerienced to do backtracing, but I'll try.

Looks like it is a h/w issue.
My system is a AMD Sempron 2800+ with 512mb of DDR400 ram. If I change the
ram speed in the bios down to DDR266 - FFMPEG encoding works. DDR333 or 400
both fail.
very strange. It used to work fine.

I guess I´ll close the bug report

may be a hardware issue. My CPU is a AMD Sempron 2800+. A bios change to make it a 2600+ and ffmpeg works. So it may be a cpu/chipset/memory sync issue that is causing the segfault.
