Bug Description

Binary package hint: konsole

When using a mouse-aware text application (e.g. midnight commander) in the KDE4 version of konsole, it is not possible to mark a text selection by holding mouse-1 and dragging. Under the KDE3 version of konsole, this required that the shift key be held but that does not help in the new konsole. It simply will not work under any circumstances.

There is at least one other report of this in the forums, for what it's worth.

Package version: 4:4.2.2-0ubuntu4
Release: Jaunty

Problem confirmed here. Text selection is impossible in VIM and MC now.

Hi Alex,

Do you know Which was the last version of Konsole in which this worked correctly for you?

I tripped over a somewhat-funky workaround:

- Starting with no active sessions, log in from kdm as a different user from your usual account (e.g. guest).

- Once in that session, push the screen-lock button and select "different user"

- Initiate a new session from there under your proper user id.

At this point, mouse selection in konsole + mc worked for me! I was even able to switch back and exit guest without losing the function. There is clearly something different in KDE setup when starting from the user-switch dialog - but what? And how to fix things so this little dance is not required?

I (along with several other folks) have reported this problem on the KDE konsole development mailing list, but not everyone is able to reproduce it. Anecdotally, it seems particular to Kubuntu KDE.

Robert.
Of course, I didn't scribed that version because I didn't expect any problem.
All I can remember is in KDE 4.1 Konsole worked fine. Problem occured after upgrading to Kubuntu 9.04.

My environment was also the result of an upgrade, not a fresh install. A smoking gun, perhaps?

Would be curious if my workaround of the previous message also worked for Alexander.

I have the same problem on a system updated from Kubuntu 8.10 to 9.04 (and then updating to KDE 4.3)

I did not manage to try the "different user" workaround. However, i noticed that the problem does not occur right away after logging in. Seems that some event triggers the problem lateron. Maybe the "trick" described above only masks the problem because the "trigger" (whatever it might be) was not used in that case?

I am now not able to select anything with mouse "push and drag" in Konsole (not only within mouse aware applications).
Konsole is the only KDE-App. that I know of with this problem.

Hi there!

Thanks for reporting this bug! Your bug seems to be a problem with the KDE program itself, and not with our KDE packages. While we appreciate your issue, it would be better if it was tracked at https://bugs.kde.org, so that the KDE developers can deal with this speedily and have direct communication with you as the reporter for more effective debugging.

Thanks!
