Bug Description

Binary package hint: xfce4-mixer

Every time I start my computer (Xubuntu 9.04), I first have to open the xfce4-mixer by clicking on the sound icon on the panel, then I have to unmute the Playback master and increase the volume that's always almost zero.
I would expect it to remember its last status (both mute on/off and volume).

Any additional information needed?

Thank you for your bug report. This bug has been reported to the developers of the software. You can track it and make comments at: http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5091.

Of course, a real quick fix is to remove pulseaudio. This normally happens when pulseaudio has been installed, either by the user or by an application the user installed.

Changed in xfce4-mixer (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Medium
status: New → Triaged

Pulseaudio seems to be running on my Xubuntu 9.04 box, but I don't know why. Could someone give a link to instructions on how to remove pulseaudio, as it is presented here as a workaround of this bug?

Thanks for marking bug #406249 as a duplicate of this one, I missed this one on my search

well, after some search I saw I was not alone and I decided to compile my own guide to pulse audio disabling on my xubuntu 9.04 64-bit box here:

http://ajoliveira.com/ajoliveira/uk/software/pulse.php

It also features the references where it was based upon.

I hope it will help, I am having pulse audio problems since I was using fedora core 8. This guide should be applicable to all xubuntu and ubuntu gnome-based systems.

All the best

Antonio (mostly an audio guy)

Are you going to make a patch or something for this bug? The solution given by Antonio de Oliveira is difficult for me, because I'm afraid of messing up the sound entirely. I'm running Xubuntu 9.10. Thank you.

I compiled and installed a newer version of xfce4-mixer which solved the problem. Build dependencies can be got easier by "sudo apt-get build-dep xfce4-mixer" . Then
./configure
make
sudo checkinstall
in the source directory. If I remember right, 2009-10-02 version can be used: http://git.xfce.org/apps/xfce4-mixer/log/ and the fix was done in 2009-04-05 version.

Maybe autogen.sh should be used instead of plain ./configure

Hm, I have the same problem, but independent of the mixer (I have been using gnome-volume-control for some time now, although I'm running Xubuntu), which suggests that the problem is not in xfce4-mixer, but in the alsa configuration, or pulseaudio itself.
I'll test the workaround suggested in bug #449783 on my next reboot.

This and all related bugs might in fact be duplicates of bug #449783.

After installing Karmic (immediately when it was released), the bug seemed
to be stomped. But then, one or two weeks ago, it reappered, with some
update I assume.

@Cruncher, AFAIK Xubuntu does not have Pulseaudio installed, by default.

Cruncher: this is an Xfce specific bug, so if you are using gnome-volume-control, perhaps you have a different bug?

Ive installed xubuntu 9.10 last week had update to one kernel and 2 days ago to another. 2.6.31-20-generic
Maybe something else couses the problem but im having the same bug and only now.
Why only now?

It started After update this week and only after 2 times restart i got 2 mixers http://www.zimagez.com/zimage/screenshot638.php

heres pastebin of update list from /var/log/apt/term.log http://paste.ubuntu.com/389875/

I removed the second one from Session and Startup->Startup removing Volume Control(2nd mixer).
But when its removed i cant get sound on couse that Volume Control(2nd mixer) needs to be unmuted.

Also 2nd mixer not responding to keyboard mute button in 2 situations. when 2nd mixer properties are open and when 2nd mixer mute is on. It responds again if 2nd mixer properties are closed and mute removed in properties. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etCjB1MpKto example video but youtube somehow has problem with sound in the middle(it dissapears till end) so look on icons when i press mute on keyboard and icon not responding in thouse 2 situations.

Maybe not responding to keyboard mute button is another bug?
