Bug Description

(See also http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6134).

Particulars:
$ uname -a
Linux ubuntu 2.6.12-10-686 #1 Sat Mar 11 16:22:51 UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linux
Hardware profile ID: c2e57c9fcdbe3a4de54681ee816b6659

Running a fresh install of Breezy. Plugging in a Logitech Dual Action joypad produces the following output in dmesg:

[4294999.502000] usb 3-1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
[4295009.641000] drivers/usb/input/hid-core.c: usb_submit_urb(ctrl) failed
[4295009.641000] drivers/usb/input/hid-core.c: timeout initializing reports
[4295009.641000]
[4295009.647000] input: USB HID v1.10 Joystick [Logitech Logitech Dual Action]
on usb-0000:00:1d.2-1

Eventually the system will freeze.

If the joypad is plugged in during boot, a very long pause will happen during the splash screen at "Loading modules". Eventually I am dumped back to the console, where the usb_submit_urb(ctrl) failed message appears, and the system continues booting (except a guaranteed freeze will happen within 5-10 minutes).

This behaviour is not observed on another system that I have (Mandriva SE 2006, 2.6.12-17mdksmp).

Plugging in other USB joypads that I have access to (e.g. Xbox 360 controller, Gravis GamePad Pro) does not produce this "failed" message.

We are closing this bug report as it concerns kernel version 2.6.12 from Breezy which is no longer supported. However, please reopen it if it is still an issue with a supported version of Ubuntu and feel free to submit bug reports in the future.

(ie fully up-to-date Feisty), I get the messages in dmesg but nothing bad (seems) to happen, nor do I observe the long freeze during boot up.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Unfortunately this bug report is being closed because we received no response to the last inquiry for information. However, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release was most recently announced - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta . If you are able to confirm this is still an issue with this most recent release please feel free to reopen this report. To reopen the bug report you can click on the current status, under the Status column, and change the Status back to "New". Thanks.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : Kernel team bugs

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
