Bug Description

Binary package hint: kubuntu-default-settings

Openoffice's splash screen in Kubuntu should have Kubuntu's colors (blue), not Ubuntu's ones (brown).

Agreed, though I don't think we can override this in the kubuntu-default-settings, so I am moving the bug to openoffice.org.

Eventually the openoffice.org package should provide 3 branding (sun, kubuntu, ubuntu) packages, this would probably also improve brandibility for derivates in general.

I am open to suggestions on how to do that without introducing new packages as well though :)

The obvious way... using diversions.

Bounce back.

http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ap-pkg-diversions.html
Before deciding to use a diversion, read Alternative versions of an interface - update-alternatives (from old Packaging Manual), Appendix F to see if you really want a diversion rather than several alternative versions of a program.

http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ap-pkg-alternatives.html
When several packages all provide different versions of the same program or file it is useful to have the system select a default, but to allow the system administrator to change it and have their decisions respected.

Clearly this is a case where several packages ought to provide the same file (but currently don't due to missing implementation).

Also, form a user point of view one ought to be able to have ubuntu-desktop and kubuntu-desktop installed, but still use GNOME as main desktop and therefore set the splash to the brownish one.
Since remixes could, technically, also wish to have their own branded version of the splash, it could become really nasty. Like kubuntu-default-settings diverts and xubuntu-default-settings (which is installed as well) diverts that and foobar-default-settings (which happens to enhance the xubuntu settings) diverts that... \o/

alternatives > diverts for a reason

This would be nasty regardless of how you attempt to do it. If you wanted separate branding packages then ubuntu-desktop and kubuntu-desktop etc would all have to depend on them which would cause problems with installation I suppose it would be less non-deterministic than using alternatives but it wouldn't be much better.

Well, let me revise the recommendation.

The openoffice.org package should implement alternatives for the splash image (i.e. no new packages or anything, just use the alternatives system). That way Kubuntu or any other distribution which chooses to give OpenOffice.org a custom branded splash can do this via the alternatives system.

[This is an automated message.]
There are no new official OpenOffice.org releases in Ubuntu packaging anymore => Won't Fix

If the problem persists, please mark this bug as "also affects project Libreoffice" or "also affects distribution Libreoffice (Ubuntu)" if that has not happened already.

Please leave references to upstream OpenOffice.org bugs in place to allow cross pollination.

I am not quite sure what you are saying.

If it were themeable there would be no bug report for making it themable. So you are confirming the bug but marking it wont fix? I believe I even suggested a rather straight forward solution to make it themable, so I am rather interested in why it won't be fixed despite being an acknowledged issue with a simple enough fix.

TIA

Because the job of the splash screen is loading the office -- thus at this point in time nothing of LibreOffice infrastructure (configuration management etc.) is loaded and that includes the VCL plugins and the desktop detection. Duplicating that code to change the color of a splash screen will make startup needlessly complex.

So, no, this is not not "an acknowledged issue with a simple enough fix".

As always: Good patches are welcome, but it is seriously not worth it.
