Bug Description

Binary package hint: thunderbird

Kubuntu 9.04
2.0.0.21+nobinonly-0ubuntu1.9.04.1

Upgraded to 9.04 Jaunty two days ago. First time I've attempted to create a subfolder in Thunderbird. After clicking create subfolder Thunderbird stops responding to the mouse. Keyboard navigation still works correctly, but subfolder is not created.

To reproduce
1. With mouse, select existing folder
2. Right click folder and select New Subfolder
3. No subfolder is created and Thunderbird does not respond to mouse clicks.

Same thing happens when using new subfolder from file menu

1. With mouse, select existing folder
2. Select File > New > Subfolder
3. No subfolder is created and Thunderbird does not respond to mouse clicks.

Hello,

i have the same problem that you described.
I don't know when it appeared (probably in the last month), since i don't create folder in thunderbird everyday.

I run Kubuntu 8.04 (kernel 2.6.24-24-generic)
Thunderbird version is 2.0.0.23 (but i noticed the problem in version 2.0.0.22 and the update didn't change anything).

I tried the following without any success :
1. delete .msf files in all .mozilla-thunderbird subfolders.
2. moved my profile to another place, then started from a totally new profile... no way !
3. apt-get remove thunderbird, apt-get clean, apt-get install thunderbird and trying the new install on empty profile... useless... (thunderbird becomes unresponsive after i tried to create new folder / subfolder)

Hardware :
Graphic card : ATI Radeon X300SE [RV370]
ATI proprietary driver : xorg-driver-fglrx 1:7.1.0-8-3+2.6.24.18-24.1
CPU : Model: 15.4.1 "Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz"

Any help welcome ! ;-)

I tried successfully the following workaround :
1. download latest thunderbird archive from www.mozilla.com
2. uncompress it to /opt (check the rights) (eg. /opt/thunderbird)
3. create a new shortcut, or modify the existing one in the K menu so that it points to the correct location (eg. '/opt/thunderbird/thunderbird')
4. test your shortcut... thunderbird should start, and create a new profile in your home directory (in my case, it created a .thunderbird directory).
5. close thunderbird (important or the modifications on profiles.ini will be overwritten with old value when it closes).
6. copy old profile (usually under ~/.mozilla-thunderbird/<profile_name> to ~/.thunderbird
7. edit ~/.thunderbird/profiles.ini so that it points to the folder we've just moved on.
8. open thunderbird (you should find back all your mails, configuration, directories, contacts, themes ans extensions)...
... and over all : you should be able to create / edit folders.

I know this doesn't explain why TB froze, neither does it correct it... but at least it helps go on working.

fastolfe,

I think the problem is related to multiple screens. Do you have a second screen attached to your video card (e.g. tv). When you have, can you please check what happens on _that_ screen when you click "new subfolder"?

Hello Michel,

thank you for your help... it's exactly what you meant : the message box for entering the folder name opens on the second screen and, because that one was shutdown i never noticed it until i read your post.
Finally, this is not a bug.
Thank you,

Olivier.

Small detail: I think it is a bug, since the window should not appear on the second screen when thunderbird is running in the first.
