Bug Description

Running 32-bit Kubuntu 8.10; extremely vanilla; no unofficial packages or repositories.

No notification that a new version (9.04) has appeared.

Following the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/JauntyUpgrades/Kubuntu, running "update-notifier-kde -u" simply causes the message "no new upgrade available" to appear.

I have (several times) re-downloaded the list files available, from both the main Canonical server and from the US server (changing sources by using the "Software Sources" program from the K menu). The result is always consistent: no new upgrade is available.

Other people on the official Kubuntu-users reflector seem to have received the notification and performed the upgrade OK. But on my system there seems to be no way to convince it that there are files that need upgrading. (Presumably, I could download a CD and install from that; but that doesn't address the basic problem that the right thing doesn't seem to be happening for me to upgrade over the Internet.)

can you post the contents of the file
/etc/lsb_release? You can either look at the file itself, or issue the command:

$ lsb_release -a

affects: ubuntu → update-notifier-kde (Ubuntu)

Actually the file is /etc/lsb-release, the command-line is still correct though

sorry

Additional info that may or may not be relevant:

The day of the jaunty release was the first time that I had used this computer in a couple of months. It did download something like 100+MB of updates (to intrepid) that had accumulated since I last used it.

I am out of ideas as to how to convince the system that intrepid is online upgradeable to jaunty.

Someone had suggested reinstalling update-notifier-kde. I tried that but it made no difference (which makes sense, since I think it's just doing its job: reporting correctly that as far as the system is concerned, nothing needs updating).

Naïvely thinking out loud here (which is probably not welcome, but I'm not happy at not being able to upgrade and I want to try to move this along)...

It seems to me that some condition is tested to determine whether the upgrade notification is displayed. For some reason that condition appears to be false when it should be true. Do we know what that condition is? Perhaps then we could work back to figure out *why* it's false.

Mmm, i have this issue 2 times, and.. a workaround was:

Donwload the alternate image of Ubuntu
Mount the image.
Start the script cdupgrade (??) from the CD
The upgrade will start

Yes, I am aware of the workaround.

However, I figure that for every person who knows enough to do that, or to come here to file a bug report, there are probably hundreds or thousands of ordinary users who are seeing the same bug and don't know what to do about it, so I think it is still important for the developers to be aware of the bug and to fix it.

The weird thing is that overnight last night, I finally received the upgrade notification on the laptop which had this problem. I did nothing at all to cause it to appear, but it looks like today's daily status check for some reason was informed that an upgrade is available, whereas none of the status checks in the past week have done so.

Hi,
I am one of the thousands ordinary users. Running kubuntu 64 bit 8.10.
/etc/lsb-release shows what posted by other users. No notification about 9.04.
update-notifier-kde -u says "no new upgrades available"

I could download the cd image and do the manual installation...but is there any solution?

thanks

"update-notifier-kde -d" WORKED!
I was using "update-notifier-kde -u" as suggested here
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/JauntyUpgrades and I was getting the "no new upgrades available" message.

Is this still an issue in Kubuntu 9.04 for upgrading to 9.10?

I can't remember with any certainty. If you'd asked soon after 9.10 came out, I'm sure I could have told you then, but now it's all a vague haze.

Anyone else who was experiencing this issue, can tell whether it is valid for karmic?

my notebook on jaunty (with KDE 4.3.2 from ppa) does not show possibility of upgrade to karmic, even after update-notifier-kde -u
I tried to install synaptic but it does not show upgrade possibility neither

lsb_release shows jaunty

update-notifier-kde -d seems to work and I am going to upgrade now

I see that in karmic I don't ever get any kind of notification of updates: I have to manually start synaptic each day to see if any updates are available. So I have a bet with myself that when lucid comes out, I won't receive any kind of notification about that either.

I've encountered the same problem with the Maverick -> Natty upgrade: no upgrade notification received and no way to get it from synaptic, kpackagekit, upgrade manager, apt-get, etc.
