[M7-LW] Rendering artifact on text in firefox and gedit

Another artifact is this artifact that occurs sometimes when the search bar is opened while a horizontal slidebar is visible.

Apparently it is not only Firefox that is affected by this bug, I suspect it may be a bigger problem with X.org, Gnome or possible the graphics card drivers.

I already have copies of the dmesg and lspci-vvnn logs at:

This is either driver bug or theme bug or X bug. more than likely a X driver bug. I would love a confirm on this by a nvidia or ati user

the issue is a video rendering one not a gedit bug

Gedit has been running really slow, so slow that I type faster than gedit renders.
I tracked it to Subpixel rendering, turned it off and it seems to be fast again.

However I also notice that the artifacts have disappeared.

can you read my bug report ( Bug #365886 ) to see if your probleme is the same. I have mostly the problem with firefox and the gnome-system-monitor can you confirm that?

Thanks for including an image to demonstrate the issue. Could you also please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log or Xorg.0.log.old file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

I'm having a similar problem after upgrading to Jaunty. I primarily see this in gmail.

BTW, I'm running an ati Radeon Mobility X1400 using the radeon OS driver.

I have exactly same problem under Ubuntu 9.04. Attached is another example (horizontal artifacts under checkboxes).

I'm also running a Lenovo T400 that I upgraded to Jaunty. I don't see the text artifacts on that laptop and it is using the ATI fglrx closed source driver.

As such, I suspect it may be a problem with the OS driver (radeon) not with firefox.

I also have this problem - Lenovo Z61m with Radeon Mobility X1400 using open source drivers. It mainly affects Firefox, also some other software, but NOT e.g. Chromium.

Me too. My laptop is Lenovo T60 with Radeon Mobility X1400 using the open source drivers. Here's how my gmail shows up in firefox:

I can not only confirm this (IBM (now Lenovo) ThinkPad T60 with a Radeon Mobility x1400), but say that it's not restricted to any one program, theme, or even desktop environment. Firefox, Thunderbird, GIMP, Nautilus, and even the desktop environment itself in certain circumstances (dragging out a selection box, for example) all render minor artifacts.

KDE seems to be affected worse than GNOME - check boxes, radio buttons, and push buttons can be partially hidden behind artifacts. Sometimes an entire text box (a URL bar or the like) or row of icons will be completely obscured by garbage until forced to refresh (selecting, typing, etc.).

Changing AccelMethod in xorg.conf from EXA to XAA seems to fix the issue; however, performance drops dramatically. Simple tasks like opening the main menu or maximizing a window can take a second or two. It is a fix, but the performance loss makes it an unacceptable one - X just uses way too much CPU with XAA to do mundane tasks.

Do you have an AGP system? If so, does it help if you try some different AGPMode values? (1,2,4,8)

I do not have an AGP system, it is a PCI Express card.

I've now tried all AGPMode values, and it doesn't help.

adam and matt, neither of you have the same hardware as the original reporter, so really your issues should each be separate bug reports from this one, as we're only going to worry about M7-LW cards here.

Nicklas, let me know whether you have an AGP system.

This bug annoyed me very much. I'm pretty sure it is due to xserver-xorg-video-ati.
I can provide any information needed for fixing this bug and devote some time to testing. Please let me know how I can help.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from Nicklas W Bjurman. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

Anyone else who thinks they have this same problem, don't reopen this bug, just file a new one using apport or ubuntu-bug.
